Over 1,000 Years of History. Step off the boat and step back in time.

Set beside the River Bure in the heart of the Norfolk Broads, the atmospheric ruins of St Benet’s Abbey reveal more than 1,000 years of history. Founded in the 9th century, St Benet’s became one of Norfolk’s most important medieval monasteries. Remarkably, it was the only English monastery to escape formal dissolution under Henry VIII, because the Bishop of Norwich was also its Abbot. This unique tradition continues today.

The Abbey’s distinctive 18th-century windmill stands among the ruins, while the surrounding waterways, wetlands and landscape provide an important home for wildlife.

Arriving by boat makes the visit particularly special. Journey from Fairhaven across our private Broad and along the River Bure, approaching the Abbey from the water before stepping ashore to explore its fascinating history. Today, St Benet’s is cared for as an important heritage site by the Norfolk Archaeological Trust, helping to preserve this remarkable place for future generations.

Important Information Before Your Visit​

 The full trip takes approximately 3 hours. The walking tour includes uneven ground and is suitable for visitors with good mobility. Sturdy, comfortable footwear is recommended. 

 

Boat trips operate from within the gardens, so all passengers must have a valid garden admission ticket or membership before purchasing boat trip tickets. Please ensure you allow enough time to arrive, check in and make your way to the departure point.
